Why Switch to a Mechanical Keyboard: Psst...They're Worth the Hype

It seems like, all of a sudden, mechanical keyboards have taken over platforms such as TikTok and Instagram by storm, moving from niche enthusiast circles to mainstream popularity. Or is it just me???
But whether you're a gamer, a writer, working in an office or home setting, a business owner, or someone who just spends lots of time typing (you get the gist), you may have noticed the increased presence of mechanical or "creamy" keyboards.
What Is a Mechanical Keyboard?
At its core, it's a keyboard that uses individual mechanical "switches" beneath each key, which can be either linear or tactile. Unlike a membrane keyboard (the kind you usually get with a PC purchase), mechanical keyboard switches offer either a "click" or "bump," giving them a unique sound and feel. This is where all the hype starts.
OK, OK—so you're not yet convinced this is the way to go? Let me count the ways and list the benefits of owning a mechanical keyboard.
1. Superior Typing Experience
The most noticeable difference between mechanical and membrane keyboards (in tech, a membrane refers to the rubbery layer in a keyboard that activates the keys when you press them) is the way it feels when you type. "Mech" keyboards are known for their precise feedback, which depends on the type of switch you choose. Here are your options:
- Tactile switches (e.g., Brown switches): These give you a physical bump when a key is activated, letting you know the keystroke has been registered. On some switches, you have to pay close attention to feel that bump.
- Clicky switches (e.g., Blue switches): Most blue switches are clicky (I say "most" because Yunzii has a blue-and-gray switch that is not clicky). As the name suggests, these switches make a loud click when pressed.
- Linear switches (e.g., Red switches): These are the most popular switches. They offer a smooth key press with no bump or click.
2. Durability and Longevity
Yes, it's true! Mechanical keyboards are built to last much longer than membrane keyboards. Their switches have a long lifespan and can withstand millions of keystrokes. These keyboards are also designed for heavy typists and gamers.
3. Customization and Aesthetics
Mech keyboards offer a high degree of customization! With a membrane keyboard, you're stuck with the default black or white colors and style until you decide to buy a new one. With a mech keyboard, you can change the keycaps (letters) as often as you'd like—and there are countless styles and designs to choose from!
Even if you never change the "base" color (black, white, brown, blue, etc.), you can still swap out the switches and keycaps to suit your mood or style.
4. Faster Response Time
For gamers, mech keyboards provide quicker response times compared to membrane keyboards. The actuation force (the amount of pressure needed to register a key press) is more precise, and some switches are designed to activate faster, reducing the time between pressing a key and seeing the action on-screen.
This can literally be a game-changer in fast-paced gaming scenarios.
Now that you're convinced you need one of these in your life, let me offer some things to consider before buying your first (or second, third, fourth—it's addicting!).
Things to Consider
-
Price: Mechanical keyboards can be expensive, so set a budget for what you feel is reasonable for your first purchase. Luckily, there are great budget-friendly options that still offer excellent features.
-
Noise Preference: Think about how much noise you like (or dislike). Switches come in silent tactile or linear options. Personally, I like silencing the backspace and spacebar keys, while the click-clacks of the letter keys are just enough for me. If you want a fully silent keyboard, that's fine too! And if the keyboard you love doesn't have the sound you want, you can customize it or find someone who does customizations.
-
Size: Do you really need a number pad? If you do, that's OK, but keyboard size matters. My favorite sizes are 75% and above. While 60% keyboards are great space savers, I always go back to 75% or 80% layouts, especially when working.
-
Ergonomics: If you type for long periods, consider ergonomics. Some mech keyboards feature a split design (often called "Alice" layouts) that helps reduce strain. Wrist rests and ergonomic mouse pads are also worth considering to support your wrists.
As you can see, there are many reasons why these keyboards not only look and sound great but are also worth the investment.
HAPPY HUNTING!
